Motivational Interviewing
For Healthcare Practitioners
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based communication approach that helps practitioners support patients to change their behaviour. This training is designed to equip healthcare practitioners with the practical skills to have more effective, collaborative conversations with patients - moving beyond traditional advice-giving, toward conversations that genuinely support lasting change.
This training is suitable for any health practitioner supporting patients with behaviour change - whether that's smoking cessation, weight management, alcohol use, managing a long-term condition, or navigating treatment adherence. It's relevant across disciplines, including nursing, allied health, medicine, and mental health services.
Delivered by a Chartered Health Psychologist with current, ongoing clinical practice, so everything taught is grounded in real experience of working with patients, not just theory.
In this course, you will learn:
-
The core principles and spirit of Motivational Interviewing, and why it works better than traditional advice-giving for supporting behaviour change
-
How to recognise respond to ambivalence - and why working against it often backfires
-
The core skills of MI, including open questions, reflective listening, affirmations, and summaries - that you can use in your very next patient conversation
-
The four processes of an MI conversation, and how they build on one another
-
How to recognise and strengthen 'change talk' and navigate conversations where a patient feels stuck
-
How to apply these skills in practice, with common challenges and space to reflect on your own approach
